NITI’s basic trends in the design of NPP control rooms are:

  • Development of NPP control concept
  • Integrated design of NPP control rooms
  • Design of human-system interface for NPP operators

The NPP control concept is being developed to establish principles and conceptual design solutions for controlling NPP processes in order to generate electricity and ensure NPP safety under all operating modes.

The development of the NPP control concept includes the analysis of the NPP Customer’s requirements and the definition of the following:

  • The types of NPP process control used and approaches to their implementation
  • Approaches to the level of process automation in various operating modes of nuclear power plants, including accidents, considering the requirements of the Customer of the NPP on the number of operational personnel of the NPP
  • Hierarchical structure of NPP technological functions considering the requirements of IEC 61839 (GOSR R IEC 61839), NUREG-0711 rev.3
  • Approaches to the formation of NPP control rooms: main control room, emergency control room, central control room and local control rooms
  • Conceptual solutions for control and management tasks in control rooms: workplaces, human-system interface, alarm system
  • Conceptual solutions for human factor engineering in the design, development, commissioning, and operation of the NPP main control rooms in accordance with NUREG-0711 rev.3

Integrated design of NPP control rooms is carried out in accordance with IEC 60964 (GOST R IEC 60964), IEC 60965 (GOST R IEC 60965) and, as a rule, includes the following:

  • NPP functional analysis in accordance with IEC 61839 (GOST R IEC 61839), including:
    • definition of all NPP functions and tasks, control and management tasks implemented for generating electricity and ensuring the safety of the NPP
    • analysis of the main characteristics of NPP functions and tasks, control and management tasks
    • distribution of control and management tasks between a person (NPP operators) and a machine (automation equipment)
  • Development of the HSI concept both for workstations based on VDU and for traditional control panels based on “mosaic” technology
  • Determination of optimal HSI configurations for the personnel of control rooms considering the tasks to be solved and design requirements for redundancy and diversity
  • Layout of automated workstations and control panels in the premises of control rooms based on the analysis of operators’ tasks in the normal operation mode and in case of accidents
  • Development of working documentation (drawings and functional specifications) of human-system interface for operators — display systems and control panels
  • Development of programs, methodologies, scenarios and participation in the HSI verification of control rooms
  • Development of programs, methodologies, scenarios and participation in the validation of NPP control rooms as integrated systems

Human-system interface for NPP operators is designed on the basis of functional analysis results in accordance with IEC 60964 (GOST R IEC 60964) and includes the development of working documentation (drawings and functional specifications) for:

  • display systems for automated workstations and for large screen displays, including: process displays, operator support displays, displays of the safety parameters presentation system, mode displays, displays of electronic instructions, etc.
  • traditional control panels implemented on the basis of “mosaic” technology
